Announcing Perl implementations of the Internet Cache Protocol (ICP)
and the Cache Digest protocol. These are available from your local
Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN) mirror site:
<URL:http://www.perl.com/CPAN/modules/by-module/WebCache/>
and also from the canonical distribution site at the JANET Web Cache
Service:
<URL:http://wwwcache.ja.net/dev/perlmod/>
The ICP module also contains some preliminary code for integrating
caches and mirror servers - using a combination of a 'fake' ICP
server, the Squid Web Cache, and a custom Squid redirector program.
This allows a mirror site to effectively appear as a peer in a caching
mesh, advertising itself as a 'hit' for all of the known URLs by which
the resources it mirrors may be accessed.
This work was supported by the Joint Information Systems Committee of
the UK Higher Education Funding Councils (JISC), as part of the JANET
Web Cache Service, and the Trans-European Research and Education
Networking Association (TERENA) through its 'Mirror Tracker'
development project. More information on this is available at:
<URL:http://squid.itep.ru/>
I'll also be giving a talk about this work and answering questions at
the 1999 TERENA-NORDUnet Networking Conference in Lund on 9th June:
