I don't think WPAD was ever really in a state where we can claim to have
"discarded" it.

WPAD gives some ideas on what existing protocols can be used for the
discovery components of "IDD", and I think we can use that information (and
the problems that have since been identified) as inputs to requirements for
IDD. As Mark said, it's quite possible that the discovery aspect of IDD
could look fairly similar to WPAD.

For the shortcomings, I think Patrick gave a good summary last week. From
memory it was the ever-expanding-DNS search, and in particular the issues
of crossing administrative boundaries, that caused concern when the WPAD
spec was initially posted.

To my knowledge none of the original WPAD authors are on this list. If
anyone is in contact with them you may wish to see if they are still
interested in this area.
