I agree. Invalidation is a very common building block, built and well
understood by many, and increasingly important to inter-cdn and
inter-content-provider-&-cdn. Flushing out protocol proposals in IETF
allows us to converge & standardize it.

That's why I (and others) think that we cannot wait for RUP req doc to
become perfect before we discuss protocol proposals. Flushing out protocol
proposals will feed back to a common requirement set and design convergence.
